What could a dose of courage, confidence and conviction give you?
Your goal - whether that is a long-awaited promotion, more ambitious projects, a full roster of clients - is not an end in itself.
You want to achieve it partly because of the things it allows you to do.
And that has to be at the forefront of your mind during any negotiation.
I recently supported a young female leader who was in the process of negotiating a promotion and a pay rise.
A high achiever, she was absolutely confident of the value she was bringing to her team, and had the courage to bring this up with her manager.
But her pattern of people-pleasing meant that she found it difficult to hold out for the terms that she wanted and felt she truly deserved.
When we unpacked this during a coaching session, she recognised that achieving the promotion and the pay rise meant that she could finally put off settling down with her partner and eventually start a family.
Building her conviction of why this goal mattered boosted her confidence and courage ahead of her performance review.
So I encourage you to go into negotiations with your eyes open.
But do not forget that this sometimes means looking on the inside for answers.
